Homebase: A Night, Brand, and Beginning

Some nights don’t just happen; they unfold as if preordained, settling into memory even as they are still being lived. The launch of Homebase one evening in February felt like that. Around the corner from Golf Park Coffee in Lynchburg, Virginia, a house stood open. Inside, low lighting pooled in soft golden halos, red streamers framed doorways, and fresh crewnecks draped over a banister led guests' eyes toward the two newest tees hanging overhead.

I reached into the bag of McDonald’s fries, fresh out of the oil, and humored myself: “I don’t think she had ever eaten cold fries.”

My mother — mamma as I called her (or beautiful, if I picked up to her voice on the other end of a phone call that I wasn’t too busy to answer) — always asked the cashier for fresh fries.

Ben is one of the most enchanted young men I know. He’s quiet. Not in the way of some, bankrupt of ideas or sentiments worth sharing, but the kind of quiet that’s attentive, searching, intuitive, and makes you lean in to listen.

In his gentle way, Ben let escape what he had come to discover the purpose of life to be.

To find the best story and then to tell it.

Something about that seems right. And I’m challenged by my soft-spoken friend. Challenged in the finding, in what I suspect to be one and the same as living itself. And in the telling.

The year, coming fast to its conclusion will be the close of a decade. Ten years. Decus. All containing the threads of countless story-lines, memories, grievances, and joys. How do you convey the whole of it all?

To find it. To tell it.

I hope to learn in the days and weeks to come, to pull each worthy thread together, to discover a story worth telling and to share it.
